Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, Democratic New York Rep., produced a fake statement concerning Washington D.C. And slavery while arguing that the State should be the District of Columbia.
The freshman congresswoman recently tweeted that D.C. was the first “free the enslaved” territory, which is not accurate.
“DC was the 1st territory in the United States to free the enslaved,” Ocasio-Cortez tweeted. “It’s where Black Americans fled the tyranny of slavery & towards greater freedom, to DC. Yet today it’s where 2nd class citizenship reigns, and the right to vote is denied.”

In actuality, in 1777 Vermont became the first U.S. territory to abolish slavery, and in 1780 Pennsylvania was the first state to formally terminate the practice. Washington D.C. Until 1790, it was not formally a territory.
