One Republican is taking a hard stance against the practice of “sanctuary cities” and is backing it up with action.
Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis is throwing his full support behind the Republican-controlled Florida Legislature’s effort to ban “sanctuary cities.”
The cities in question constantly produce policies that mandate municipal law enforcement not cooperate with federal immigration authorities. With 775,000 illegal immigrants giving Florida the third largest illegal immigrant population in the U.S., the issue is getting far out of hand.
So DeSantis is pushing bills SB 168 and HR 527 which have both advanced to the Florida House of Representatives and Florida Senate.
If successful the new laws would prohibit “law enforcement agencies from having policies that impede communication or information sharing with ICE and gives them a procedure to follow when someone who was arrested cannot provide proof of citizenship or legal residency or is subject to an immigration detainer.”
If DeSantis is successful, Florida will become the tenth state to enact such a ban. Preceded by Alabama, Arizona, Georgia, Iowa, North Carolina, Mississippi, Missouri, Tennessee, and Texas.
